Aluminum alloys for the deep drawing

THE DEEP DRAWING is a technological process where by a metal sheet or a circle is plastically formed to assume a cylindrical or cup shape and it allows to realize objects having rounded borders and elliptical or cylindrical form.
By deep drawing it’s possible to get from a flat metal sheet a concave shape , maintaining the average thickness, constant . This operation is carried out, through the use of a punch which pushes the metal sheet, possibly fixed to a blank holder, within a die.
Thanks to Metalluminia experience, in the deep drawing field , there are available a high number of appropriate products for various fields application.
The main properties of aluminum alloys for deep drawing facility:
  • Massive deformation : compression test (Erichsen test)
  • Metal sheet deformation: tensile test
  • Grain size : it influences the material formability ,the mechanical resistance of the final product and surface finishing
  • Surfaces &Edges states : ragged edges, may activate premature metal steel breakage
  • Anisotropy : mainly due to the cold rolling process
  • Planar Anisotropy : it causes a different behavior between the rolling directions of the sheet plane ( to 0°, 45°, 90°). It causes a not uniform deformation “ears” in the deep drawing.
  • Normal anisotropy : it causes a different behavior between the sheet plane and the thickness direction. It causes a more or less thinning of thickness of the sheet.
The most of the aluminum alloys have an excellent formability but is necessary to evaluate the type of processing and the equipment used. Machining typical are: cold deep drawing and heat forming; spinning; coining; calendering; profiling;
