COILS AND SHEETS IN ALUMINIUM ALLOYS WITH HIGH CONTENT OF MAGNESIUM

The series 5000 alloys differentiate from the others aluminum alloys for the mechanical properties which increase with the magnesium content.
The alloys employed industrially contain up to 5% (of magnesium) , superior contents would compromise the alloy stability.
Magnesium , sometimes associated with additions of manganese and chromium, is the principal alloying element in the series. These alloys exhibit a broad range of medium mechanical properties, good general weldability, excellent low temperature performance (cryogenics) and excellent resistance to seawater and marine atmospheres. Their forming properties, which are good at low magnesium contents, fall off as the magnesium content increases. In the case of specific applications involving heating to temperature above 65 ° C in moist or hostile atmospheres care has to be exercised when choosing the alloy and temper, particularly as concerns those alloys containing more than 3,5 % magnesium. (Metalluminia will be glad to advise)
Applications for Al Mg alloys vary very considerably build ing. Shipbuilding (hull and superstructure), chemical industry (seawater desalination) and foodstuffs (can manufacture and cooking utensils), haulage and transport (truck bodies, road tanks and vehicle coachwork) and general engineering (fabrication).
Among the better known alloys, special mention may be made of 5005 , 5052, 5754, 5083..

The most known alloys
  • EN AW-5052
  • EN AW-5754
  • EN AW-5083

Alloy 5052
It contains about 2, 5 % of magnesium which the chromium addition offers a good compromise among the mechanical resistance, plastic deformability, corrosion resistance, fatigue strength. It’s very used to make food containers and others employments like boilers, industrial “bodyworks”, road signs and so on…

Alloy 5754
It contains about 3% of magnesium, it’s very used in the building, in the building sites, In mechanical engineering and in industrial vehicles and civilian vehicles.
Alloy 5083
It contains from 3 to 5 % of magnesium with chromium and manganese addition .It presents the best characteristics among the semi-finished cold rolled also with cryogenic temperatures. Additionally it Guarantees a good weldability and a good corrosion resistance especially in marine atmosphere. It’s very used shipbuilding and industrial constructions.
